The Sioux Lookout OPP Detachment Board is seeking applications for a Sioux Lookout Community Representative.
The Sioux Lookout OPP Detachment Board, constituted under the Community Safety and Policing Act is a civilian oversight body that works with the Sioux Lookout OPP Detachment to ensure effective policing within its member municipalities (Sioux Lookout and Pickle Lake). Although not directly involved with how policing is provided in the communities, the Board plays a role in determining objectives, advising the Detachment Commander, and monitoring performance. It also facilitates community input on policing priorates and policies.
The Sioux Lookout OPP Detachment Board is comprised of five members: two members appointed by the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Pickle Lake (a Council Representative and a Community Representative); two members appointed by the Council of The Corporation of the Municipality of Sioux Lookout (a Council representative and a Community Representative); and a Provincial Appointee (vacant).
The successful candidate will be appointed by the Sioux Lookout Council to represent the community.
Key Responsibilities (as per Section 68(1) and 70 of the Community Safety and Policing Act:
- participate in the OPP Commissioner’s selection of a permanent detachment commander in accordance with the process established by the Commissioner (as and when required);
- determine objectives and priorities for the Detachment;
- advise the Detachment Commander with respect to policing provided by the Detachment;
- monitor the performance of the Detachment Commander;
- review the reports from the Detachment Commander regarding policing provided by the Detachment;
- provide an Annual Report to the members municipalities regarding the policing provided by the Detachment in their municipalities;
- provide input into the Detachment’s Local Action Plan.
Applicant requirements:
- Must be a resident of Sioux Lookout.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- If conditionally successful, the applicant must provide a Police Record Check prior to confirmation of appointment.
Appointee requirements:
- Take Oath/Affirmation of Office.
- Review, agree to (sign), and comply with prescribed Code of Conduct.
- Complete six units of mandatory Board Training (provided by the Ontario Police College, free, online) within six months of being appointed. A member may not exercise powers or perform duties of a board member until the member has successfully completed training.
- Participate in Board Orientation (provided by Staff).
- Attendance at meetings (usually virtual or hybrid meetings). (The Board meets a minimum of for times per year in accordance with legislation.) Remuneration is $2,000 per year. Expenses allowed for approved training and attendance at related conferences and meetings.
The following are ineligible to be a member of the Board:
- A judge or justice of the peace.
- A member of a police service, a special constable, or a First Nation Officer.
- Any person who practices criminal law as a defense counsel or as a prosecutor.
- Any person employed by either of the two municipalities policed by the Sioux Lookout OPP Detachment Cluster (Sioux Lookout and Pickle Lake).
- A director, officer, or employee of a prescribed policing provider.
- A former member (retired or otherwise) of a police service who served in the Policing Service(s) of the Sioux Lookout OPP Detachment area.
