WHEREAS  

  

  

  

WHEREAS  

The Métis people and their descendants have significantly contributed to the exploration, growth and development of Canada; and  

  

Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 recognizes and affirms the existing Aboriginal rights of the Métis across Canada as rightbearing people; and  

  

  

WHEREAS  

Louis Riel was a humanitarian, an advocate for the Métis people and one of the Métis people’s foremost historic leaders who strove for justice and for the rights of the Métis people as Manitoba joined Confederation; and  

  

  

WHEREAS  

Each year, Métis people pay tribute to the legacy of Louis Riel, celebrate the sacrifices of the Métis, who continue to work towards an acknowledgement of their rights and recognition as a distinct Nation; and  

  

  

WHEREAS  

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout recognizes the impact Métis people have made and continue to make to our municipality; and  

  

  

NOW  

THEREFORE  

I, Doug Lawrance, Mayor of the Municipality of Sioux Lookout, do

hereby proclaim Thursday, November 16, 2023, as
“Louis Riel Day” and do commend its thoughtful observance in the Municipality of Sioux Lookout.
