Community Improvement Plan

Sioux Lookout, ON – An ambitious 2024 Community Improvement Plan has been launched by the Municipality of Sioux Lookout. The Plan is aimed at bolstering development, sustainability, and overall prosperity within the Municipality. This strategic initiative will help guide future development, in alignment with our community’s evolving landscape.

The Community Improvement Plan has been crafted in collaboration with local stakeholders and experts to establish a toolbox of programs designed to support specific planning objectives. It does so by aligning financial incentives with identified planning goals for enhancing infrastructure and fostering economic growth.

Proposed developments need to satisfy general eligibility requirements and then specific eligibility requirements under each program.

Broadly, the objectives of this Community Improvement Plan iteration are to:

  • Enhance the opportunity for success of retail business in Sioux Lookout by encouraging more attractive areas and a wider variety of goods and services.
  • Encourage the development of additional residential units as infilling within the Community Improvement Areas of Sioux Lookout and Hudson.
  • Promote the improvement of private and public properties in a manner that reflects a caring and inclusive community.
  • Assist in future development within the Municipality of Sioux Lookout by reducing the costs for initial development and ensuring that there are incentives to increase the overall value of lands within the Municipality.

Key highlights of the plan include:

  • Infrastructure Enhancement: Financial incentives to encourage private investments in infrastructure projects tailored to meet the evolving needs of the community, improving accessibility, safety, improved functionality and beautification of our commercial areas.
  • Economic Development Initiatives: Strategic initiatives to attract and retain businesses, promote entrepreneurship, and stimulate job creation, fostering a vibrant and resilient local economy.
  • Residential Intensification: New residential units developed within the Community Improvement Areas will be eligible for financial incentives to encourage the development of additional housing on serviced lots or within existing buildings.

A pre-application meeting is required and can be scheduled with Jody Brinkman, Development Services Manager, or Jennifer Esposito, Economic Development Officer. The 2024 deadline for applications is Friday June 21st at 4:00 pm CDT. Applications received after that time will be deemed ineligible.

Mayor Doug Lawrance remarked, "The launch of our Community Improvement Plan represents a pivotal moment for Sioux Lookout. This plan embodies our collective vision for a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future. By working together and leveraging our strengths, we are confident that we can overcome challenges and seize opportunities to create a better tomorrow."

Economic Development Officer Jennifer Esposito adds, "The Community Improvement Plan is a testament to Sioux Lookout's commitment to driving positive change and building a thriving community. With incentives for new developments, landscaping, renovations and residential intensification, we are not only enhancing our infrastructure but also beautifying our downtown core and encouraging sustainable growth.”

The implementation of the Community Improvement Plan underscores Sioux Lookout's commitment to driving positive change and building a thriving community for generations to come.
