Cemetery Clean Up Notice

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout will be undertaking its routine, seasonal clean-up of decorative items left at gravesites over the past season that have now become unsightly and/or cause an obstruction to grounds maintenance at the three Municipally-operated cemeteries, namely: Hillcrest, Sacred Heart, and Northway.

Commencing June 15, 2022 and ending at the end of the day July 3, 2022, we ask all Interment Rights Holders to please remove Christmas wreaths, artificial flowers, solar lights, keepsakes, and any other decorative/memorial items – essentially, any object that impedes the maintenance of the cemeteries.

Beginning Monday, July 4, 2022 the removal of such items by cemetery staff will commence. This is a seasonal activity that is critical to enable the ongoing maintenance of the cemeteries. The Municipality undertakes this process twice annually, in accordance with the Cemetery By-law (By-law No. 26-21), and specifically:

  • Section 8.6: The Municipality reserves the right to remove any plant, flower, shrub or tree with no compensation to the interment rights holder, when the removal is required to perform routine Cemetery maintenance.
  • Section 9.3: The Municipality shall not be responsible for the loss or damage of any personal articles, including but limited to plants, shrubs, vases, etc., left in a Municipal Cemetery.

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout appreciates the cooperation and understanding of Interment Rights Holders in ensuring the ongoing maintenance of the cemeteries.
