Sioux Lookout, ON – On June 17, 2025, The Municipality of Sioux Lookout hosted a successful Housing Forum, highlighting innovative initiatives, new resources, and major investment announcements that will help address housing needs and support local economic growth.
Mayor Doug Lawrance opened the event with a land acknowledgement and remarks about the significance of collaboration in building stronger communities. “This forum brought together the right people – residents, developers, service providers, and government partners – to explore tangible solutions,” said Mayor Lawrance. “The projects we announced today are a reflection of Sioux Lookout’s forward-looking approach to housing and development.”
One of the key announcements came from HT Bigwood LP, who unveiled plans for a transformational new development located across from the airport. The project includes a multi-unit housing complex, a 200-room hotel, a conference centre capable of hosting up to 300 guests, and a lakeview restaurant. The development is 100 percent Indigenous-owned by a partnership of ten First Nations, with additional communities invited to join.
“This project is more than just infrastructure, it’s a strategic, community-driven investment that positions Sioux Lookout as a regional hub for business, tourism, and reconciliation,” said Jen Esposito, Manager of Strategic Initiatives. “We’re proud to see this level of Indigenous leadership and collaboration shaping our future.”
The Municipality also introduced its newly developed Secondary Unit Guide, a tool to support homeowners interested in adding rental or garden suites to their properties. The guide outlines what is permitted, the necessary approvals, and key considerations to help residents understand the process from start to finish.
“This guide is part of the implementation of the Municipality’s 2025–2030 Affordable Housing Strategy,” Jody Brinkman, Development Services Manager added. “Whether it’s for creating a unit for a family member or helping ease housing demand in the community, this guide offers a clear, user-friendly pathway.”
The forum also featured an exciting update from Rideout Bay Developments, who announced a 10,000 square foot mixed-use building at the Hillcrest Hub. The project will include commercial lease space on the main floor and residential apartments above. Construction is expected to begin within the next few months. Rideout Bay is currently inviting local employers to partner with them in securing apartment units for staff or future tenants.
A concept video offers a preview of the building and vision for the site.
