Exciting times are ahead for recreation in Sioux Lookout! The Municipality is exploring ways to enhance community spaces, promote health and wellness, and offer new opportunities for residents and visitors. Feedback from residents shows strong interest in improved amenities, including a potential community pool, which could also help attract and keep workers in town.
A recent Building Condition Assessment (BCA) found that about $7.2 million in updates will be needed over the next five years to keep the Recreation Centre safe and reliable. A structural assessment next year will provide additional insight before upgrades begin.
The Municipality is moving forward with a dual-track plan: assessing necessary upgrades to the current facility while starting early planning for a future recreation complex, which could take up to ten years to complete. This approach ensures residents have access to recreation today while preparing for Sioux Lookout’s growing population, expected to reach around 8,000 by 2035.
“This planning work is an important step in ensuring Sioux Lookout has recreation facilities that remain safe, accessible, and responsive to community needs. By taking a careful, informed approach now, we can support quality of life for residents today and in the years ahead.” – Brian P. MacKinnon, CAO & Municipal Clerk
Council will review all findings at a key decision point in 2028 to determine the best long-term path. Residents can follow progress, review timelines, and see the pool feasibility study on the Community Compass Dashboard.
