Sioux Lookout, ON – The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is excited to announce that Council has voted to proceed with funding the winner of the Community Choice Project Fund initiative.
With 78% of participating residents voting in favour, the Waterfront Programming & Supervision Project will see supervised aquatic programming taking place at Farlinger Park (Town Beach) this June and July.
This one-time summer initiative will address the current gap in local swimming instruction, water safety education, and supervised recreational swimming opportunities. Programming will include:
- Learn to Swim (Levels 1–4)
- Swim to Survive
- Open-water lane swimming
- Aquafit classes
- Supervised recreational swimming for open and private events
The program will conclude at the end of July, once the $20,000 of funds allocated from the 2025 Municipal Accommodations Tax have been fully utilized.
Given Sioux Lookout’s lake- and river-based geography and strong connection to outdoor recreation, water safety remains a key priority. Currently, families must travel to Dryden for swimming lessons and supervised aquatic programming, creating access barriers. This initiative will provide local, equitable access to aquatic education and safe recreational swimming opportunities.
To ensure safe program delivery, temporary equipment such as anchored buoys and lane lines for open-water swimming, a roped shallow-water lesson area for young children, and a recreational feature such as a floating dock or slide will be installed.
The project includes the purchase of essential safety and instructional equipment, including rescue tubes, a rescue paddleboard, first aid supplies, instructional materials, and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), a portable device used to treat sudden cardiac arrest.
All programming will be delivered by certified staff holding National Lifeguard Service and Standard First Aid certification, with additional waterfront-specific training. Proof of certification and insurance coverage will be secured prior to program launch.
Following completion of the program in July, a report will be presented to Council outlining participation levels, final budget and expenditures, and overall program outcomes. The findings will help inform future decisions regarding aquatic programming and community recreation priorities.
The Community Art Project, which proposed the installation of a mural by Lac Seul artist Storm Angeconeb at the Memorial Arena to celebrate Indigenous art and culture, received 22% of the vote.
