Proclamation

WHEREAS: The Ontario Onsite Wastewater Association (OOWA) invite all onsite sewage system owners across Canada to take part in Septic Awareness Week, taking place September 14th to 18th, 2026. This initiative aims to promote responsible septic system use and maintenance, with an emphasis on safe access to septic systems, through education and public engagement; and

WHEREAS: With millions of onsite sewage systems in use across the country, it’s critical that owners understand how their systems work and what simple steps can extend the life of their investment; and

WHEREAS: Proper septic system use and routine care are vital to protecting public health, preserving our highly valued groundwater, lakes, streams and waterways, and avoiding costly repairs that can result from neglect; and

WHEREAS: Damaged, unsecured, or poorly maintained septic system lids can pose serious safety risks, especially to children. It is essential for all septic system owners to take a proactive approach to maintenance and ensure their systems operate safely and responsibly;

IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED: To support Septic Awareness Week to be held on the week of September 14th to 18th, 2026;

NOW THEREFORE: I, Doug Lawrance, Mayor of the Municipality of Sioux Lookout, do hereby proclaim the week of September 14th to 18th, 2026, as Septic Awareness Week in the Municipality of Sioux Lookout and encourage all owners and users of septic systems to learn about the best practices for the operation and upkeep of septic systems.
