News Release

Sioux Lookout, ON – The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is excited to announce the launch of its new Citizen Portal on Wednesday, July 29th. The portal will provide residents, businesses, contractors, and developers with a convenient way to access municipal services online while maintaining all existing in-person and paper-based service options. Residents will now be able to submit applications digitally, make online payments, track application progress, and communicate with staff through a secure online platform.

The new portal is designed to modernize and increase the Municipality’s customer service capacity by increasing self-service options that are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

CAO and Municipal Clerk, Brian MacKinnon, said, “This portal represents a significant step forward in the Municipality’s digital transformation.” He continued, “It allows residents to access services when and how they need them, while helping us streamline internal processes and improve overall service delivery. It’s about making local government more accessible, efficient, and responsive.”

The Citizen Portal will allow users to submit the following applications online:

  • Building Permits
  • Planning and Development Applications
  • Service Requests to report concerns and inquiries

Rather than visiting Municipal offices multiple times, completing paper forms, or calling for updates, residents will be able to manage the entire process online.

Citizens will have the option to create an account in the portal or fill out permits, applications, and service requests as a “guest,” but we encourage users to create an account to unlock the full capability of the system. Residents who create a Citizen Portal account will have access to a personalized dashboard where their information is securely stored in one place.

With an account, users can:

  • Start and submit new applications
  • Save applications and complete them later
  • Review previous submissions
  • Track the status of permits, applications, and service requests in real time
  • Receive and respond to staff comments on applications
  • Upload additional documents
  • Make online payments
  • View payment history and receipts
  • Communicate directly with Municipal staff through a secure messaging system

We are providing residents with the option to submit applications, permits, and service requests as a “guest” because the Municipality recognizes that not everyone wants to create an account. While guest users may access basic services, creating an account provides the greatest benefit by offering application tracking, online communication, payment history, and access to all records in one location.

The new portal offers significant advantages over traditional paper-based processes and in-person visits:

  • Available Anytime: Residents can submit applications, service requests, and payments 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without the need to visit the Municipal Office during business hours.
  • Real-Time Updates: Applicants can check the status of their permits, planning applications, and requests online at any time instead of calling or visiting the Municipal Office for updates.
  • Improved Service Delivery: The Citizen Portal provides a faster, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable way to access municipal services by streamlining applications, reducing paper use, and enabling secure, centralized communication between applicants and Municipal staff.
  • Secure Online Payments: Residents can pay applicable fees online safely and conveniently, saving travel time and reducing the need for in-person transactions.
  • Greater Transparency: Residents can see where an application is in the review process and what steps remain before a decision is made.

The Municipality of Sioux Lookout's new Citizen Portal will officially launch on Wednesday, July 29th.

Additional information, including portal access instructions, user guides, and training resources, will be shared through the Municipality's website and social media channels.
