Council Brief

The following is a summary of the proceedings of the Regular Council Meeting held February 15, 2023:

  • Robert Favot, Emergency Services Manager and Fire Chief, was presented with a Recognition Plaque by Larry Lundy from the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) in recognition of his retirement and of 46 years of dedicated service. The Mayor read out a letter of recognition on behalf of Jon Pegg, Fire Marshal of Ontario.
  • Auditors Richard Jagielowicz and Judy Kleinhuis from Grant Thornton LLP presented the 2021 Consolidated Audited Financial Statements, and Council subsequently passed a motion to receive those statements.
  • Council received the Municipal Operating Budget Summary as of December 31, 2022.
  • Council supported a motion to lobby the Federal Government to reinstate the Northern Allowance for the Sioux Lookout Area. Council directed staff to send the resolution to request the federal government to designate the Municipality of Sioux Lookout as a Prescribed Intermediate Zone to: the Honourable Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora; the Honourable Sol Mamakwa, MPP, Kiiwetinoong; the Kenora District Municipal Association; the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association; the Township of Pickle Lake; and the Municipality of Red Lake.
  • Council supported the Town of Petrolia Resolution, calling on the Province of Ontario to make school boards responsible for conducting their own trustee elections or, at minimum, to compensate municipalities for administering trustee elections.
  • Council approved amending Schedule “A” to By-law No. 68-22 (Being a By-law to Make Appointments to Various Boards, Commissions and Committees by adding Jennifer Hancharuk to the Sioux Lookout Environment Committee, Hari Sankar to the Sioux Lookout Environment Committee and Councillor Raymond Angeconeb as the Lac Seul First Nation Representative to The Municipal Committee on Truth & Reconciliation.
