Museum

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - Updated October 2012:

The transition plan for the Sioux Lookout Community Museum moves forward! We recognize the need for more appropriate space for displays, workspace for our Volunteer Curator's Group to continue to maintain our artefacts, and the need for more comprehensive programming.

We are pleased to advise that the Municipality will soon be exploring specific sites in order to determine a permanent home for our collection, which will double as a launching pad for increased community programming.

Your Input Matters!

We are also seeking input from the community on the future of the Museum. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts, ideas, dreams, vision for the future of our Museum by completing our short online survey: www.surveymonkey.com/s/SiouxLookoutMuseum.

The Sioux Lookout Museum is proud to welcome you to our website! Please feel free to browse through here, and we hope to see you in person soon!

Background

The Sioux Lookout Museum was officially opened on July 18, 1981 in a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. However, the museum existed in various incarnations well before then. The Sarah Vaughn Public Library was situated on the corner of King Street and Fifth Avenue. It was in this small building that volunteers began to collect donations from local townspeople that related to the history of the town. The overwhelming success of the displays convinced the energetic locals that a full-size museum was desperately needed. Through hours of hard work and tireless fundraising, the town council agreed to set aside a piece of land to house the museum. At around that same time the Public School Board donated two portable classrooms which were no longer needed. The volunteers came together to build a permanent establishment out of the trailers, and that is the museum which is still being used to this day.

Our Mission

To preserve the local history of the Patricia Area in a way which is visually appealing as well as educationally stimulating.
