Mayor's Message
Sioux Lookout is accessible by air, rail and highway and our culturally diverse and scenic community, consisting of approximately 5,500 residents, sits nestled on the lakeshores of Pelican, Abram and Lac Seul with the rugged Canadian Shield and beautiful Boreal forest as our backdrop. We are the true "Hub of the North," providing essential services to 29 remote First Nation communities. Regional partnerships, growth and prosperity are among the mutual goals the Municipality wishes to pursue with our 25,000 northern neighbours.
The Municipality has been in the midst of a positive economic development upturn market over the past four years. Among the amenities and investment opportunities Sioux Lookout is pleased to offer to residents, visitors, partners and investors include:
- the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre, a 60-bed, state-of-the-art facility including a full complement of physicians, nurses, and allied health care professionals;
- an impressive inventory of commercial, industrial and residential land, with development opportunities in the rural, urban, lakefront and lake view settings. Recent acquisitions and improvements include the Boreal Trails subdivision on the north side of the community, providing 90 new lots for residential growth and two parcels of Crown Land in Hudson which will provide breathtaking views of picturesque Lac Seul for new homeowners and cottagers alike; new, fully-serviced lots at the Sioux Lookout Airport (one of the busiest in Northern Ontario), thus enabling our municipal Airport to offer increased airside and groundside services to both the aviation sector and the commercial and light industrial sectors which further serves to solidify our commitment to being the premier Transportation Hub for the Far North;
- the extension of water and sewer infrastructure along Highway 72 to the Ministry of Natural Resources Fire Management Centre will enable the MNR to move forward with the construction of a new and expanded fire attack base, in addition to fostering the growth of the commercial and light industrial sectors along this highway corridor;
- significant downtown revitalization initiatives, including the transformation of a former hotel into the Sioux Lookout Cultural Centre for Youth and the Arts and the restoration of our Heritage Train Station. These accomplishments represent the second phase of a four-phase downtown revitalization commitment.
Sioux Lookout is a renowned, year-round destination for vacations, weekend getaways and daytrips. Residents and visitors alike take advantage of a wide variety of outdoor recreational and sporting opportunities including fishing, hunting, water sports, hiking, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. Whether you are considering a visit to our community, or a permanent move, come stay with us and share the beautiful wilderness community that we call home!
I invite you to come visit, play and prosper, and be sure to join us as we plan to celebrate our centennial anniversary in 2012!
