PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A Review and Update of The Municipality of Sioux Lookout's Official Plan and Comprehensive Zoning By-Law.  The project generally included:

• Review of existing conditions and documents
• Co-ordination of the Airport Aeronautical Zoning/Regulations
• Preparation of Draft and Final Background Reports
• Preparation of Draft and Final Official Plan and Zoning By-law documents

The Official Plan for the Municipality of Sioux Lookout was approved by the Council of the Municipality in November 2000 and subsequently approved by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs on January 22, 2004.  This was the first Official Plan for the Municipality and followed the restructuring of the Municipality which formerly consisted of the Town of Sioux Lookout, unorganized townships including the Drayton Settlement Area, Alcona Settlement Area and the community of Hudson. 

The Comprehensive Zoning By-Law No. 29-01 was prepared at the same time as the Official Plan and approved by Municipal Council on September 19, 2001.  By-Law No. 29-01 replaced all previous By-Laws and the Minister's Zoning Order which covered the unorganized townships (administered by a joint Planning Board).  There have been sixty five (65) amendments to the Zoning By-Law since its adoption.

Planning Staff assessed and determined that there was a need to review both the Official Plan and Zoning By-Law.  There are several reasons for the need for the review and it is particularly timely with respect to the changes to the Planning Act and requirements for the legislated five-year review.

STATUS

The new Official Plan was adopted by Council on April 20, 2011 and approved with modifications by the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing on December 2, 2011.

The new Zoning By-law was passed by Council on April 20, 2011 and came into effect on the Minister's approval of the Official Plan.

December 2011  The new 2011 Official Plan and 2011 Zoning By-law are now in effect.
