Mayor's Message
Welcome to the Hub of the North! Sioux Lookout is a full service community that is located on Pelican and Abram Lakes set in the pristine boreal forest of Northwestern Ontario. Geographically we are positioned to act as a hub of service for the twenty nine First Nations communities north of Sioux Lookout. As a result, our economy and culture are deeply enriched. We are also a destination spot for a wide range of tourists ranging from families who are vacationing to business people here for meetings and conferences.
The next few years in Sioux Lookout will be very exciting and challenging. We possess the unique characteristic of being the only municipality in the region that is growing. Our economy is diverse and predominantly knowledge based but our resource and transportation sectors are flourishing. One of the largest projects in our community is the creation of a new hospital which will provide many health services to the northern reserves as well as the town itself. It is scheduled for completion in 2009. Currently, processes have also been initiated to extend sewer and water infrastructure allowing for expansion of the industrial park at our Airport as well as south down Highway 72 for more commercial investment. There will be the additional spin-off of creating more residential opportunities. Council has made a long term commitment to Economic Development and we have expanded our municipal services to meet a wide range of development needs.
One of the greatest resources of which Sioux Lookout can be proud is its people and our best service is hospitality. We enjoy a high level of volunteerism indicating that we are a very healthy community. The success of many projects and events is largely due to the dedicated residents who have made community successes their priority. Our service clubs are generous and very active. The leadership of groups such as Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, Sioux Lookout Anti-Racism Committee and the Lion’s Club have contributed to the success of most local events and projects. Every year for the first week in August, Sioux Lookout hosts the annual Blueberry Festival. It is a ten day social and cultural event that offers a number of different activities appealing to people of every age, culture and personal interest. The Silver Anniversary of the festival is 2007 and it will be a memorable occasion!
I am very proud and honoured to be able to represent the community of Sioux Lookout as Mayor. The new Council and Municipal Organization will strive to provide excellent service to all residents and visitors making our community one of the most vibrant.
